Amazon Tablet is a game changer for Android.. and unfortunately for Google as well

The rumors have been running wild about the Amazon Kindle Tablet for what feels like forever, but now that someone has had a hands-on with this device, the reality of just how toxic this could be to Google and other Android tablets is sinking in.

TechCrunch’s MG Siegler has posted his thoughts on the device  and we have to agree that this will spell doom for many other Android Tablets, but more importantly it is going to spell doom for a whole bunch of other tablet makers.

Here are the supposed specs:

  • 7-inch full-color screen, no eInk (10-inch possibly coming in 2012)
  • Two-finger multi-touch support
  • Runs a version of Android that’s older than 2.2 but it’s been heavily customized
  • No camera
  • UI looks and feels like Amazon’s iOS Kindle app
  • 6GB of storage
  • $250 with a free year of Prime

Everyone was touting 199.00 as the price, but the effective price here is below that if it includes a year of prime (79.95) so that brings the price down to an effective $170.00

This is a major fork in the road for Android as the Kindle tablet is running a pre 2.2 version of Android that has been heavily customized to the point of not looking at all like Android. This fork is going to quickly end up with in our best estimation 60% of the tablet market share for Android so where does Google go from there as the work done on Honeycomb and Ice Cream Sandwich is going to be pretty useless at that point.

When you look at what tablets are used for and that is mostly content consumption you can bet that Amazon has it all over every other maker and that probably includes Apple at this point as Amazon has ebooks, a music service, cloud, video, audible.com, and software services from their own appstore that include games, maps, and pretty much anything you can need.

Kindle-droid should quickly become the defacto thing people will think of when they think of Android, and that is not a good thing for Google. Not at all.
