Bing! to take
over
Yahoo search as Microsoft
continues to take aim at Google.
The Wall
Street Journal
reported Tuesday,
that
Microsoft's
Bing will now power Yahoo
search! The deal involves Yahoo
agreeing to use Microsoft's
search engine on its Web sites,
with Yahoo handling the sale of
text ads that appear alongside
the search results for its own
sites and some of Microsoft's.
So basically Bing gets all of
Yahoo's market share in exchange
for some future ad revenues. No
cash up front is what is being
reported tonight.
Microsoft has spent more than a year trying to acquire Yahoo's
search business and although they have tried to give yahoo up to 47.5 billion
dollars in the past year, it appears they are going to gain this market share
without any up front investment. We don't know what Yahoo is thinking, but kudos
to Microsoft as they are going for it hard on search and this deal will give
them nearly a 30% share and growing. This is the deal that should make Google
scared.
The big question in all of this is the giveaway of Yahoo's
search business. yes, Yahoo will get to sell ads, but is now out of the search
business altogether completely on the come. It's like Yahoo has decided to
become strictly a advertising third party, they are going to become Microsoft's
ad agency basically. Is that better than the 47.5 billion dollars they gave up?
Time will tell, but probably not.
This is probably not the end of this story. Stay tuned for
further updates as they become available.
