Microsoft tries out its new Office subscription model,
and we really like it... a lot.
Microsoft has announced that it will
begin selling its Office programs to consumers on a
subscription basis starting mid-July, in a bid to reach
thrifty PC buyers who would otherwise pass on
productivity software or would partake of one of the
many free options available now.
Anti-virus and office suite: OneCare and
Office 2007 for $70? That’s an absolute bargain
The Microsoft Equipt bundle (formerly “Albany”) includes
Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote, plus OneCare and a
handful of existing free Windows Live applications
Under the subscription model, upgrading to a new version
is included in the annual cost
Equipt’s $70 price tag falls between the high and low
end of the annual fees of the most popular security
programs from vendors such as McAfee and Symantec.
This makes Equipt, horrendous as the name may be almost
a no-brainer for most individuals and small businesses.
Office 2007 alone can cost into the hundreds of
dollars, and OneCare is only $20 cheaper than Equipt is
per year. This deal is amazing and is a glimpse at the
future - software as service model. Time to get rid of
Windows ultimate Microsoft lets try this on for size,
add Windows latest versions, Office full versions, and a
few more bells and whistles at $119.99 per year (ten
bucks a month) and give us a all you can eat 199.99
annual subscription to all Microsoft products by
download, games and all. If Microsoft is aggressive,
they can create an entirely new market that never
existed before, along with stable revenue that is not
dependent on release dates and the like.
