Time For — This Week in Spying on Your Neighbors

Ah, remember the good old days when only the KGB and the East German Stasi were this interested in watching their citizens with such zeal?

Story 1: The Senate hearings into computer surveillance:

A special U.S. Senate hearing is expected in Philadelphia Monday to discuss the issue of remote computer surveillance.

Senator Arlen Specter, D-Pa., said the subcommittee on crime and drugs will examine federal laws concerning remote tracking software. Specter, the subcommittee chairman, said new legislation may be needed to address webcam surveillance.

The hearing comes in the wake of a laptop spying controversy in the Lower Merion School District.

Story 2: Video Surveillance deployed inside London Public Bathrooms where you have to pay 50p to pee.

You can imagine my surprise after I paid my 50pence to use the public bathroom, walked in and found myself staring at not just one but three ceiling mounted video surveillance cameras. I had to get real close to their enclosures to convince myself that I wasn’t seeing things. Not only was it really there, but it was a Pan-Tilt-Zoom model with a microphone to top it off. Must get some great noises coming from there. It has also been reported that London officials are now installing cameras with speakers to allow them to talk as well as see and listen. Perhaps its just me, but I had absolutely no idea that this was legal anywhere, let alone in downtown London, UK. Sure I knew that London has more cameras per square mile than any other country on the planet, but in bathrooms?! How are they getting away with that one? It is appalling! Teen cell phones leading to unintended consequences including child pornography charges for many teens.

Child porn investigators are discovering a disturbing trend. Many photos are taken by the victims. Teenagers send nude photos to boyfriends and girlfriends. These are spread by cell phone and often end up online.

Sexting resulting in adult charges for teens

Passing notes in study hall or getting your best friend to ask a boy if he likes you or, you know, LIKES you, is so last century. Nowadays, teenagers are snapping naked pictures of themselves on their cell phones and sending them to their boyfriends and girlfriends.

Many of these pictures are falling into the wrong hands — or worse, everyone’s hands, via the Internet — and leading to criminal charges.

Many of these pictures are falling into the wrong hands — or worse, everyone’s hands, via the Internet — and leading to criminal charges.

Cases have been reported in New Jersey, New York, Alabama, Utah, Pennsylvania, Texas and Connecticut

Anheuser-Busch working around the rules and marketing to teen boys with their web viral ad campaigns

Anheuser-Busch is generating lots of buzz with ads that are as bawdy as they are hilarious, but you won’t see it on television, and it barely mentions the beer it’s advertising. These ads are too hot for TV and quite obviously market to the 16-30 Internet demographic. The problem is that that demographic is way too young for alcohol advertising (see videos after the jump). Cloud Computing is the latest buzzword, but danger is just around the corner

Cloud computing is a term you are hearing a lot these days. The way you are hearing it used is no more than a farce, and most possibly one of the most dangerous trends in the tech world today. Cloud computing has been defined many ways, but it is basically providing scalable Internet based software services distributed across disparate datacenters. The common theme is reliance on the Internet for satisfying the computing needs of the users.

This is by no means a new idea. Way back in the 90’s we had thin clients and a network server. The thin clients were no different than today’s PC’s and the server can be compared to “the cloud” It didn’t work then for some very good reasons that still apply today.

ISP’s are not always available. Lightning, fiber cables hit by ditch diggers, or servers go down, etc. With an app on the desktop, you are still productive. If your apps are in the cloud, you are effectively out of business. Read the rest of this entry »
